Reading Diary B: Ovid's Metamorphoses I

I am reading Ovid's Metamorphoses I

Vulcan- Hephaestus
Venus- Aphrodites
Mars- Ares

   Echo
  • Nymph, Echo, fell for a man (Narcissus) who was lusted after by many. However, she can only repeat the last words said because she used to trick Hera while the nymphs were with Zeus.
  • She tries to seduce Narcissus but he runs away. She then withers away in a cave and all that’s left in the world is her echo.
           Narcissus
  • He sees his reflection and falls in love with himself. He couldn’t bear not being able to be with his “love” and he withers away. He then is transformed into a flower.
  • This is where Narcissist originated.
          Pyramus and Thisbe
  • Girl and Boy had fallen in love with each other, but are separated by a wall. They can only talk through a crack in the wall, but they do so everyday.
  •  They agree to run away together, Thisbe is there first but she sees a lion nearby and runs away to a cave to safety. She drops her veil and the lion sees it as it walks by and chews on it a little then leaves.
  • Pyramus thinks she is dead when he finds her veil and kills himself, because of his love. Then she finds him dead and she kills herself, because she loves him so much. (Romeo and Juliet?)
  • The tree was soaked with their blood and the fruit turned the color of their blood permanently.
      Ares and Aphrodite
  •  Hephaestus finds out that Ares and Aphrodite (his wife) are having sexual relations. He decided to catch them in the act.
  • He then makes a trap like that of a spider web to capture the lovers in the act.
  • When the two go to the bedroom and begin to have relations they are caught. Hephaestus then opens the door and shows all the gods their infidelity. It became the best story in the heavens.
        Perseus and Andromeda
  •  Perseus was travelling with Medusa’s head and anywhere her blood touched the earth it turned to poisonous snakes.
  • He asked Atlas the titan for hospitality and to be able to rest in his land. He said no because he was afraid of a prophecy in which a son of Zeus would raid his land. Perseus then turned Atlas into a mountain with Medusa’s head and the mountain now holds the sky.
  • He is then flying and sees Andromeda chained to a cliff. He fell for her and sees a sea monster that came out of the water heading to eat her. He goes to her parents and offers to save her in exchange for her hand in marriage. (That's certainly a way to win over the in-laws!)

         Perseus and Medusa
  • Perseus flies to the sea monster and wounds it with his sword and kills it.
  • When Medusa’s head was set on leaves they hardened into stone. Sea nymphs took seeds that were turned to stone and they became coral.
  • He then describes how he killed Medusa in her sleep and Pegasus was born in her blood.
  • Medusa used to be beautiful and had exceptional hair. However, Neptune violated her in Minerva’s temple and she punished her by changing her hair to snakes.
